Semantic Problems ofIidioms Interpreting

An important point which must be underlined is that idiomatic expressions are not only colloquial phrases, as a lot of people believe. They can be found in formal style and in slang. What, then, is an idiomatic expression? We can say that an idiomatic expression is some number of elements which, taken in the same place, mean something different from the separate expressions of the idiomatic expression when they are found individually. The way in which the phrases are combined is often funny, illogical or even grammatically wrong. These are the special features of some idiomatic expressions. Other idiomatic expression are completely regular and logical in their grammatical aspects and vocabulary. Because of the individual properties of certains idioms, we have to study the idiomatic expressions as a whole and we often fail to amend any part of it (except perhaps, only the grammatical form of the verb).
English is very rich in idioms. In fact, it is difficult to speak or write English language without using idiomatic expressions. An English native speaker is very often not aware that he is using an idiom; maybe he does not even realize that an idiom which he implements is grammatically wrong. A non-native learner makes the correct use of idiomatic English one of his main aims, and the fact that some idioms are illogical or grammatically wrong causes him trouble. Only careful study and exact learning will help.
It cannot be explained why a particular idiom has developed an unusual arrangement or choice of phrases. The idiom has been fixed by long usage as is often understood from the vocabulary.
